The goal of this funding analysis is to provide a comprehensive picture of the current state of U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) research investment in HIV/AIDS and three of its most common coinfections—hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and tuberculosis (TB)—after five years of flat funding at NIH (2004–2009). For AIDS research the Office of AIDS Research (OAR) provided TAG with consistently coded cross-institute, NIH-wide data, but with HBV, HCV, and TB there is no central, consistent, dollar-denominated, and publicly available reporting mechanism for disease-specific, cross-institute investment. Thus, the 2007 portfolios of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and tuberculosis research were pieced together from data provided by each of the relevant institutes and centers (ICs). For the third year, Treatment Action Group (TAG) analyzes and reports
on the annual funding of tuberculosis (TB) research and development
(R&D). The top 40 TB research funding institutions were surveyed
for actual disbursements made for R&D in fiscal years 2005, 2006,
and now 2007. three-year data reveal trends in funding and demonstrates
an alarming shortfall in the growth of R&D during the initial years
covered by The Global Plan to Stop TB: 2006–2015. Read the executive summary and download the report.
