Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr is the founder and global director of ICAP at Columbia University and University Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine at Columbia University– Columbia’s highest academic honor. Through ICAP, she leads a large team working in more than 30 countries around the world providing support in addressing key public health challenges. Through an approach centered on health systems strengthening that provides technical assistance, implementation support, and supports research and impact assessments in partnership with governmental, non-governmental organizations and civil society groups, palpable progress in reaching critical health outcomes has been achieved. She is also director of the Global Health Initiative at the Mailman School of Public Health. In addition, Dr. El-Sadr has led numerous epidemiological, clinical, behavioral, and implementation science research studies that have furthered the understanding of the prevention and management of HIV, TB, and non-communicable diseases. Dr. El-Sadr is a Research in Action Award Honoree (1998), a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellow (2008), was appointed to the National Academy of Medicine (2009) and as fellow in the African Academy of Sciences (2019).
