Partners In Health is committed to advancing access to innovations that improve care for people with TB infection and TB disease. Such an effort is consistent with the right to science enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and with PIH’s mission “to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care” and goal “to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need of them”.
PIH pledges to work in three mutually reinforcing ways to increase access to shorter TB regimens by the end of 2024:
- Implement 1/4/6 regimens in Partners In Health care delivery service areas, in partnership with National TB Programs, civil society, and other stakeholders
- Intensify screening for and diagnosis of TB infection and TB disease to find more people who need treatment and connect them with 1/4/6 regimens, through implementation of Xray with CAD; increased access to molecular diagnostics; and greater number and proximity of screening sites for people we serve
- Implement “1” in several PIH service delivery areas
- Implement “4” for children in all PIH service delivery areas
- Implement “4” for adults in select PIH service delivery areas
- Implement “6” in select PIH service delivery areas
- Expand ongoing social support to include people receiving the 1/4/6 regimens
- Advocate for access to shorter regimens at the national and global level
- Work with government partners to update national guidelines, and TB strategic plans in all care delivery sites
- Engage with Country Coordinating Mechanisms (CCMs) in several sites to advocate for higher priority of innovation in Global Fund NFM4 grants, as well as resources for 1/4/6 implementation through portfolio optimization, reprogramming of unspent funds, and seeking additional catalytic funds
- Use PIH platforms to share implementation experiences to support uptake of 1/4/6 regimens by other actors, beyond PIH service areas
- Advocate in all fora for relevant investments in the 5Ss- Staff, Stuff, Space, Systems, and Social Support to build health systems capable of delivering comprehensive TB strategies to those who need it most
- Conduct and report upon research, with local and international partners, that optimizes access to innovations that improve TB care (select care delivery sites)
- Offer to serve as a research partner site for 1/4/6 research priorities, including evaluation of preferences for regimens and care delivery
- Evaluate strategies for improved screening and diagnosis
- Conduct cascade analysis of increased screening, pilots
